영국의 민요로서, 지금의 요크셔(Yorkshire), 북해 연안에 있었던 행락지 스카버러(Scarborough) 에서 8 월 15 일부터 45 일간 열렸던 교역 시장 스카버러 페어가 소재가 되고 있지요. 연인에게 버려진 어떤 남자가 농담조로 그 여성에게 터무니 없는 요구를 이어가는 내용으로 이루어져 있다고 합니다.

 

현대에 가장 널리 알려진 것은 영국의 가수인 '사이먼 & 가펑클 (Simon and Garfunkel)' (*) 이 편곡한 것으로, 고요한 분위기와 더불어 2 절부터는 '찬송가 (The Canticle)' 라 이름 붙여진 또 다른 가사가 배경에 들어가지요. 1963 년에 폴 사이먼 (Paul Simon) 이 작사한 것으로 전쟁을 비판하는 내용을 담고 있습니다 - 이 당시는 베트남 전쟁 시기였고, 이 무렵에 전쟁 반대를 호소하는 여러 움직임들이 있었지요.

On the side of a hill in the deep forest green,
Tracing of sparrow on snow-crested ground,
In blanket and bedclothes, the child of the mountain
Sleeps unaware of the clarion call.

On the side of a hill, a sprinkle of leaves
Washes the grave with silvery tears.
A soldier cleans and polishes a gun.

War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions,
Generals order their soldiers to kill,
And to fight for a cause they have long ago forgotten.

찬송가

깊은 초록빛 숲의 언덕 한 켠,
눈 덮인 땅의 참새들의 흔적 위에서
이불 덮은 산의 아이들이 잠드네,
그 부르는 소리를 알지 못하는 채로.

그 언덕의 한 켠 위에서 한 무리의 나뭇잎들이
은빛 눈물로 무덤을 씻어내고,
병사는 총을 깨끗이 손질하네.
